After a grueling day of bumpy flights, long layovers and terrible food, we finally made it to Frankfurt and got out of the airport. We headed via train to our couchsurfer Hannah's house. She welcomed us with open arms and showed us our room (!) not a couch but a big comfy bed! We quickly showered and got cleaned up, we were determined to nip this whole jetlag thing in the bud so we headed out for dinner and drinks with Hannah. She took us to an amazing traditional German tavern with a courtyard and trees growing through the building, but more importantly, they served ApfelWein (apple wine) and traditional Frankfurt fare. We ordered everything on the menu (not really, but it was a FEAST!): HandKase mit musik (Hand cheese with music, called so because it is handmade and your bowels thank you later by providing the music) Frankfurter, Grunsause (local sauce made with 7 fresh green herbs) and some delicious potato dishes.
Our first of many prosts!
This time with Hannah!
We pretty much completely cleared these plates, we were starving after the long day of flying.
After finishing our Apfelwein and abendessen (dinner), we headed off to another little bar with a patio and cheap beer and wine (1€!) for a night cap.
The next day we woke up and headed into Frankfurt to see the sights. We needed to find a cheap pay as you go phone, which was a challange and had us walking around in circles, but finally after visiting three stores we were able to buy what we needed and then relaxed with some pizza-like bread sticks in the park for lunch. Then we headed to the old part of town called Römer, where we visited the Dom and the Dom Tower (the church and the gothic tower that rises above the whole city).
The Dom (tower) from below, standing in the archeological gardens.
The steep winding stairs we climbed to the top of the tower.
And of course the view from the top made all of those stairs worth it!
Amy in the square in front of the town hall in Römer, actually all a reconstruction since basically everything in the city was destroyed in WW2.
We spent the rest of the afternoon walking around the older parts of the city, we crossed a pedestrian bridge which was covered in locks to represent couples (anniversary, wedding, etc...) Some had been there for 15+ years and it looked pretty awesome.
Eiserner Steg
When we started to get hungry and the sky looked like rain, we headed back and stopped at the grocery store to pick up some essentials (milch, brot, fleisch, kase) for snacks, breakfast and lunch. Hannah surprised us by announcing that she would be making dinner for us and some of her friends. She made an amazing Quiche and salad. We all enjoyed beer, wine, conversation and some card games late into the evening.
It felt great to be welcomed into the family!
We had a great time in Frankfurt, but now we say Auf Wiedersehen to Hannah and our new friends as we head to Schweinfurt to begin our first workaway!
Kewl...
